Stout Affogato

February 16, 2015

For those of you who are shocked at the inclusion of a beer cocktail, don’t worry, I haven’t suddenly become a beer fan.  I’m still recovering from my post-travel illness so today’s guest post is brought to you by our resident beer drinker, my husband Stephen.

For today’s weekly cocktail I am taking over the recipe and writing duties as Maya is too busy coughing to enjoy a cocktail. Maya is not a beer fan, so I’m taking advantage of my guest poster status and exploring one of my favorite flavor combos – coffee and ice cream. But not just coffee and ice cream, we’re kicking it up a notch and making a Stout Affogato, an affogato-inspired beer cocktail.

I remember the first time I enjoyed the simple pleasures of an affogato.  When I was in college my roommate took a bowl of soft serve vanilla ice cream from the cafeteria, the kind that comes out of a self serve machine, and then poured a cup of hot coffee over it creating this delicious and creamy caffeinated dessert. So simple, yet so brilliant.

My tastes have grown up a bit since college, but this simple concoction is still one of my favorites. The addition of your favorite stout makes a great boozy pick me up for a snowy day. I used Guinness Stout from a can but any good stout will work. Milk Stout Nitro from Left Hand Brewery also would work nicely and would pair well with ice cream.

Not only does this Stout Affogato cocktail go down smooth, but the swirling colors as you mix this drink make it look kind of like a blowing Nor’easter in your glass.  The stout, ice cream and espresso combine perfectly to create a delicious winter cocktail.   Enjoy!
