Bourbon And Blood Orange Cocktail

January 19, 2015

The Monday of a three-day weekend counts as Sunday right? Let’s go with yes, at least in terms of enjoying this bourbon and blood orange cocktail.  I’m still on a citrus cocktail kick, but I was in the mood for something that felt more winter-like, so I made a quick cardamom simple syrup and used a nice spicy bourbon. You could of course use regular simple syrup and use any bourbon, whiskey, or rye you have on hand and it will still be delicious. But at the risk of sounding like a broken record, the blood orange is the star here and you really need freshly squeezed blood orange juice to make this simple cocktail truly amazing!

Personally, I’m about to kick back with one of these and enjoy the rest of my three-day weekend. Hope you can do the same!

Bourbon And Blood Orange Cocktail

Makes: 1 cocktailbourbon-and-blood-orange-cocktail-treats-and-eats

Ingredients

For the cardamom simple syrup

  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 6 cardamom pods

For the bourbon and blood orange cocktail

  • 2 oz freshly squeezed blood orange juice (I needed 1 blood orange)
  • 1 oz bourbon
  • ½ oz cardamom simple syrup
  • 2 dashes of angostura bitters

Directions

To make the cardamom simple syrup

Add the sugar, water, and cardamom pods to a small saucepan and boil until sugar is fully dissolved (stir to make sure sugar doesn’t burn). Let cool in the fridge until ready to use. The longer you let the cardamom sit in the simple syrup, the stronger the flavor will be.

To make the cocktail

Add the blood orange juice, bourbon, simple syrup, and bitters to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass. Enjoy!

Notes

You can use bourbon, rye, or whiskey. You could also use regular simple syrup without the cardamom if you don’t have any on hand.
