I may be in the minority, especially in this year’s cold and snowy New England winter, but I love winter. There’s something about bundling up and eating hot food that makes me feel warm and cozy. I greatly prefer it to the oppressive heat of summer. When I moved up to Boston I’d assumed that most people would feel the same. I mean, why live in New England if you hate the cold, right? Apparently I was wrong. A lot of people seem to hate the snow here too. But the wonderful thing about this cocktail is its ability to serve as both a winter and summer drink. Love the cold? Then the spiciness of the dark rum combined with the sweet maple flavor will make the Brown Derby a cocktail to warm you up and enjoy in front of the fire. Hate the cold? Then enjoy the fresh lime and rum combo and imagine you’re on the beach. Either way, you will love this drink!*
Brown Derby Cocktail
Adapted from Esquire
- 2 ounces dark rum (I used Old Monk)
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice
- ½ ounce maple syrup (or to taste)
Add rum, lime juice, and maple syrup to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a martini glass. Enjoy!
*Note, this is not a syrupy sweet rum drink. The spiced dark rum really complements the fresh tart lime and makes this a very nicely balanced cocktail.
